What’s the difference between a directional antenna and an omnidirectional antenna?

A directional antenna is an antenna that radiates and receives electromagnetic waves particularly strongly in one or several specific directions, while its radiation and reception in other directions are either zero or extremely weak. Due to their characteristics, directional antennas are often used to cover relatively long streets and offer the following advantages:
1. It has a large forward gain.
2. This feature is particularly useful when a cell can suppress backward signals if it might potentially interfere with the cells located behind it. Directional antennas can enhance indoor coverage in certain buildings within the microcell coverage area.
Variation in Types: Antennas exhibit different radiation or reception capabilities depending on the direction in space—this is known as the antenna’s directivity. Based on their directivity characteristics, antennas can be classified into two main types: omnidirectional and directional. The following section will primarily explain the differences between these two types as well as their associated parameters.
An omnidirectional antenna radiates uniformly in all horizontal directions, with a radiation pattern that spans 360°—this is what’s commonly referred to as non-directional. Generally speaking, the narrower the beamwidth, the higher the antenna gain. In communication systems, omnidirectional antennas are typically used for short-range applications, offering wide coverage and low cost. Their typical gain is below 9 dB. The radiation pattern of an omnidirectional antenna closely resembles the shape of an apple.
A directional antenna exhibits radiation with a specific angular pattern in the horizontal plane—this is what we commonly refer to as having directivity. Like an omnidirectional antenna, the narrower the beamwidth, the higher the gain. In communication systems, directional antennas are typically used in environments characterized by long communication ranges, small coverage areas, high target densities, and efficient frequency utilization. We can also think of the relationship between omnidirectional and directional antennas in this way: An omnidirectional antenna radiates signals in all directions—receiving signals from front, back, left, and right. By contrast, a directional antenna is like having a bowl-shaped reflector behind the antenna; signals are transmitted only forward, while signals headed toward the rear are blocked by the reflector and redirected forward, thereby enhancing the signal strength in the forward direction. The primary radiation pattern of a directional antenna resembles an inverted, somewhat incomplete cone.
